Dear Company,

I am sorry to hear about the loss.

MG stood head and shoulders above the rest and I'm sure he will be missed by all. Hearing this news was sad and I'm sure it came as a surprise to many.

I remember MG as being helpful and having a great sense of humor.

MG was always looking up and never let anyone get down.

I also remember the time MG once said, "more hands make the work lighter."

Bless.

It was my joy to get to know Mr. Gelman during the last fifteen months of his life. If I brought as much joy into his life as he brought to mine, then, indeed, God was smiling upon both of us. My heartfelt condolences go to Daniel, Gretchen and the rest of the family. I will never forget Mr. Gelman and especially the songs we sang together, which always brought such a beautiful to his face. Emi Tollefson

Gretchen and Daniel,
My thoughts are with you on this very sad occasion.
As you know, your father and I were close friends since the 1950s when we were at NBC as lighting directors. Marv's enthusiastic personality was always a great source of pleasure over the many years of our friendship. We had many visits together that always seemed to include at least one museum visit. This would then be followed by recovery period to relax our stiff neck muscles resulting from a thorough evaluation of the lighting installation.
I will miss him greatly. My love to you both.

As many know, Marvin was a tremendous story teller and one that always sticks in my head was one from his NBC days called crazy shots. I will do my best to try to put the story into his words.

"It was live TV which made it so exciting. On the Steve Allen show we used to do this thing called “Crazy Shots”. There was a studio door in the theater that opened right out into the street and we started to just open the door during live taping to see what was going on outside. Sometimes it was funny and sometimes not very exciting. However, some crazy guy got wind of it and one day we opened the door and he was there in a rain coat. He opened his coat, had nothing on underneath and flashed right into the camera” Riveted I asked Marvin what happened and he said “Well that was the end of crazy shots…we never opened that door again”

Rest in peace Marvin… You were, and are, still loved by many. We at LSI will continue your legacy with pride.

To Dan and everyone in the Gelman family, and all of LSI - I have always been inspired by Marvin's enthusiasm for pushing the boundaries of what a track lighting instrument can and should be. I remember being on an LSI factory tour years ago and he was so excited by the then "new" CMH lamp technology he was practically levitating! Now, upon hearing of his passing, I know that he has levitated to the heavens, where his spirit will endure in the form of sunlight!

I inter acted with Marvin Gelman during the early 90's when the IES was trying to produce a Recommended Practice for Museums. Marvin provided not only wisdom and understanding about light, museums and artifacts but he also provided a fountain of knowledge about what looks good and what works. His practicality coupled with his sense of vision and wit provided a path for all of us to follow. Thank you, Marvin. And to Dan and his family, my deepest sympathies.

Marvin is a person I have heard of -and in all the years we specified the LSI products that was all he was. I thougth one day we would be able to meet but the time slipped away to who know where.

It saddens me to think that his passing occurred without our having met and having congratulated him personally for the great contribution he has made to our industry. Having worked with his staff, and being so familiar with the company, my heart goes out to you at LSI and to Marvin's family in particular. The quote by Marvin was a great inspiration and I thank you for posting it. I humbly provide this contribution from Thoreau "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined." G_d bless you Marvin -and thank you.
